The Nou[s] Nou[s] Diaries (2010-2012)
A play on the French words for “Nanny”- “nou-nou” and “us” - “nous,” is part of a larger body of work that documents my time as a Nanny in a wealthy suburb of Paris in my Twenties. Finding myself part of a friendship group of eight Nanny’s from the UK, Germany and Australia, the series assembles moments of our closeness, brought about by the excitement, freedom and challenge of being in an unfamiliar land alongside images of the children. Three of the images were taken at or near the playground where we met daily for an often comical episode of children’s games, emotions and conversation mixed with our adult versions of these things. Between childcare, life revolved around the weekend, guys and food as hinted at in the rest of the series. As well as themes of friendship and femininity, The Nou[s] Nou[s] Diaries highlights the links between childhood and adulthood through images of both child and adult dress-up, play and comfort.
